Music & Memory— Organization Spotlight
It’s the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and in addition to our work at memory care homes, the Chords for a Cause team wants to highlight the work of other nonprofits that work with Alzheimer’s patients on a daily basis.
The Music and Memory non-profit organization caters to the millions of elderly Americans that experience cognitive and physical difficulties every day. They also help patients who have left behind their life, including friends, family, and even music. Regardless of their friends and family’s best efforts, they often lack social interaction and their lives just aren’t the same. There is no miracle pill involved, but Music and Memory helps elders at nursing homes and other care organizations find renewed meaning and connection in their lives through the gift of personalized music.
Their mission is to help individuals with a broad range of mental and physical conditions engage with the world, and ease pain with personalized music. It started with the thought that music is deeply rooted in our conscious and unconscious mind.
Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease lead to cognitive decay and memory loss, but music activates the brain, often opening up a rich trove of memories that are associated with familiar or beloved songs and pieces. The technique offers an effective, side-effect-free approach to improving quality of life and care. Not only does it awaken the brain, but it also has a dramatic impact on individuals in hospice, and boosts spirits, decreases pain, and brightens moods for individuals in adult day centers and memory care locations.
